Saturday 7/15 Action Opportunities

1. The U.S. House is now moving to defund the Election Assistance Commission (EAC), the federal agency that is meant to serve as a critical point of defense against any future election system hacking. They know midterms are coming out next year, and are hard at work engineering new methods of voter suppression. Defunding the EAC would set up the nation for even more election problems and voter disenfranchisement. Contact our Representative to voice your opposition to this.

  • Goodlatte: Staunton (540) 885-3861, Harrisonburg (540) 432-2391, Lynchburg (434) 845-8306, Roanoke (540) 857-2672, Washington DC 202-225-5431 and email form here.
  • Suggested script: “Hello, my name is _____ and my zip code is _____. I am contacting Representative Goodlatte to express my concern about the defunding of the Election Assistance Commission. The threat of hostile interests hacking our elections remains a serious problem, so we should be building up our voting technology and protections, not demolishing an agency that does so. I ask that the 2018 spending bill include sufficient funding for the EAC. Thank you.”

2.  The House Judiciary Committee passed a pair of immigration bills [HR 2431 and HR 2406] that collectively would enable and expand Trump’s mass deportation agenda. Goodlatte is co-sponsoring the first, and sponsoring the second. The first would empower state and local law enforcement to enact their own immigration laws and penalties. The second would increase the number of deportation officers and arm each with an M-4 rifle. Contact Goodlatte and let him know that you oppose these bills.

I am contacting Representative Goodlatte because I’m extremely concerned about the expansion of Trump’s mass deportation agenda through H.R.2431, the Davis-Oliver Act, and H.R. 2406, the ICE Authorization Act of 2017. I oppose these bills, and ask that Rep. Goodlatte drop his co-sponsorship of HR 2431 and vote against it when is comes to a full House vote. Furthermore, I ask that he withdraw the dangerous bill, HR 2406. Thank you.”

3. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – next Saturday, July 22 at The Valley Mission

Local & Vocal is organizing a meal at The Valley Mission, and we will be doing voter registration. The homeless population is one of the least heard at the ballot box, and we are hoping to make sure that as many people as possible have a chance to be heard this November and beyond. If you are able to help with the meal or donate food, please contact Local & Vocal; if you are interested in helping with the voter registration opportunity, please message or email us here at Indivisible Staunton.
