Sunday 7/2 Action Opportunities

1. On June 26th, the Supreme Court of the United States decided to reinstate the Muslim Ban in part. “Muslim Ban 3.0” went into effect 72 hours later on June 29th at 8 pm EST for nationals from Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. According to the Supreme Court ruling, individuals who can demonstrate a bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the U.S. will not be affected by the ban.   There are some things we can do to oppose the ban against Muslims, despite the SCOTUS ruling, by contacting our members of Congress.

  • Goodlatte: Staunton (540) 885-3861, Harrisonburg (540) 432-2391, Lynchburg (434) 845-8306, Roanoke (540) 857-2672, Washington DC 202-225-5431 and email form here.

  • Suggested script: “Hello, my name is _____ and my zip code is _____. I am contacting Senator/Representative ____________ because I am concerned about discrimination against Muslims immigrating to the US and the SCOTUS ruling. I am asking you for two things: 1. To extend the definition of family to include grandparents, fiancé/es, aunts, uncles, nephews, and nieces. 2. To pass stronger anti-discrimination and sanctuary resolutions so that liberty and welcome may prevail.  Thank you.”

2. We’ve contacted our senators and will continue to do so, but today let’s reach out to let Mitch McConnell hear from us as well, to ask for public hearings on healthcare instead of secret deals.

  • Mitch McConnell: Washington DC (202) 224-2541, Fax (202) 224-2499, and email form here.
  • Suggested script: “Hello, my name is _____ . I am contacting Senator McConnell in his role as Senate Majority Leader. I am concerned that the secrecy and speed of the AHCA bill don’t serve the American public. These hasty actions are hurting your party. I would like Sen. McConnell to slow down the process and have open, collaborative hearings that address the needs of all Americans.  Thank you.”

3. The Senate has postponed the vote on the ACA repeal until after the July 4th recess (after July 7th). Please contact Goodlatte, Kaine, and Warner and ask them to schedule town halls during this recess specifically to discuss the healthcare bill. (Kaine is holding one of his “Kaine Connects” events on July 5th but will not be there in person.)
