Friday 6/16 Action Opportunities

1. The Midnight Rules Relief Act [S. 34], would allow Congress to overturn any presidential or executive branch regulation finalized within the final 60 days of an administration.  Under the current laws, Congress can only overturn one regulation at a time, but this bill would speed up the process and allow for potentially dozens of regulations to be overturned at once.  Regulations issued during the lame duck session after an election are known as “midnight rules.”  This bill is aimed at the regulations from the Obama Administration’s last 60 days.  Contact our senators to ask them to ensure that Congress does not group former President Obama’s regulations to overturn them en masse rather than considering them individually, as is currently the requirement.

  • Suggested script: “Hello, my name is ______ and my zip code is ______. I’m contacting the senator to ask him to vote no on S. 34.  It’s unethical for regulations enacted at the end of a president’s term to be subject to different rules for repeal. Congress must be separate from the executive branch.  Thank you.”

2. Our healthcare continues to be under threat.  As ever, contact our members of Congress to fight for affordable, quality healthcare coverage.

3. EVENT – Friday – 9:00am-Noon – Do Your Job Bob! – 117 South Lewis Street
Please notice the change in time. It has been suggested that there is more traffic during this time. We will also have the added benefit of being in the shade during this time. Bring your protest signs and bring a friend.

4. UPCOMING EVENT – SATURDAY, 6/17: First day of “Walking the Line: Into the Heart of Virginia.” A walk of Resistance and CELEBRATION along the proposed fracked-gas pipeline (ACP) path. See for yourself what is on the line — the forest habitats, mountains, farms and homes that are in danger of irreversible destruction.

Starting in Highland County, we will follow as close as possible to the proposed path for 150 miles (1st leg) – Through Bath, Augusta and Nelson Co, and into the heart of Virginia; Buckingham County- the site of the proposed toxin-emitting Compression Station.

Our vision is for this to be a celebratory, peaceful walk of resistance, to share the stories of the communities and the beauty of the landscape that would be impacted, to raise awareness and help ensure that these ill-conceived plans do not come to fruition.
