Tuesday 5/23 Action Opportunities

1. On May 11, 2017, House Bill 2414- the Stop Waste and Misuse by the President (SWAMP) Act, was introduced in the House of Representatives.  [HB 2414.]  A summary of the bill: “This bill requires the President, Vice President, President-elect, Vice President-elect, or an immediate family member of such an official, whom the U.S. Secret Service is authorized to protect and who, while traveling, stays in a hotel or other establishment providing daily-rate accommodation in which that person has an ownership or financial interest, to reimburse to the Treasury: (1) any amount expended by the Secret Service for such protection, and (2) any amount expended for other costs incurred by the government pertaining to that stay.”  Contact Goodlatte to ask him to support this fiscally responsible measure.

  • Goodlatte: Staunton (540) 885-3861, Harrisonburg (540) 432-2391, Lynchburg (434) 845-8306, Roanoke (540) 857-2672, Washington DC 202-225-5431 and email form here.
  • Suggested script: “Hello, my name is _______, and my zip code is ________. I am contacting Representative Goodlatte to ask him to support HR 2414, the SWAMP Act.  The president has already spent and enormous amount of taxpayer money for his weekend trips to Mar-a-Lago as well as to Trump Tower, all while profiting from these trips thanks to the interest he still maintains on the properties.  Taxpayers should not be forced to subsidize the president’s golfing trips to his own properties.”

2. The Congressional Review Act (CRA), passed into law in 1996, makes it easier to repeal executive branch regulations such as those that affect environmental and consumer protections.  Republicans and the new administration have used and abused the CRA to repeal over a dozen regulations set forth by the previous White House administration.  S.1140, the ‘Sunset the CRA and Restore American Protections’ (SCRAP) Act, would put an end to the CRA and allow federal agencies to reinstate rules overturned by the CRA.  This SCRAP Act has been introduced into both the house and the Senate. Contact our members of Congress and ask them to support this legislation.

  • Goodlatte: Staunton (540) 885-3861, Harrisonburg (540) 432-2391, Lynchburg (434) 845-8306, Roanoke (540) 857-2672, Washington DC 202-225-5431 and email form here.
  • Kaine: Washington DC: 202–224–4024, Manasses 703–361–3192, Roanoke 540–682–5693, Virginia Beach 757–518–1674, Richmond 804–771–2221, Abingdon 276–525–4790, Danville 434-792–0976, and his contact form is here.
  • Warner: Washington DC 202-224-2023, Roanoke 540-857-2676, Abingdon 276-628-8158, Norfolk 757-441-3079, Richmond 804-775-2314, Vienna 703-442-0670. His “Submit Comment” form is here.
Suggested script: “Hello, my name is _______, and my zip code is ________. I’m asking Senator/Representative  ______________ to support S.1140, the SCRAP Act.  The current administration has been abusing the Congressional Review Act to repeal important protections with little or no public input.  The only safe thing to do is repeal the CRA.”
