Wednesday 5/17 Action Opportunities

1. Late last week, Trump issued an executive order establishing a commission on election integrity. This election commission will make recommendations to the president about how to address the non-existent problem of voter fraud. This commission is a thinly veiled attempt to suppress voting rights.  Contact Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring and ask him to publicly commit to preserving voting rights.

  • Mark Herring: 804-786-2071  Contact form is here.
  • Suggested script: “Hello, my name is _______, and my zip code is ________.  I’m contacting Attorney General Herring because I’m disturbed by Trump’s recent creation of an election integrity commission, despite a lack of evidence that voter fraud is a problem. This commission’s extremist membership and Trump’s own false statements about the 2016 elections suggest that the group will work to limit voting rights nationwide. I’m asking the Attorney General to commit publicly to preserving voting rights by challenging discriminatory policies, such as voter ID laws, that suppress voting in the name of electoral integrity.  Thank you.”

2. The rules of the Senate ensure that individual senators have immense power to interrupt the regular course of business. They can raise points of order and other motions, call for votes and quorum calls, offer amendments, etc. Congress should not be conducting business as usual when our democracy is under direct threat. Tell our Senators to object on every motion. This will effectively slow the Senate to a crawl, making it difficult to carry on business as usual until a special prosecutor is appointed.  Contact our senators and urge them to force an independent investigation by refusing to let Senate business continue as normal.

  • Suggested script: “Hello, my name is _______, and my zip code is ________.  I’m contacting the senator to express my serious concerns about Trump’s recent actions interfering in the Russian investigation and the constitutional crisis we are now facing. These problems must be immediately addressed, and I urge Senator ___________ to withhold unanimous consent and hold no votes or confirmations on the Senate floor until an independent investigation is established.  Thank you.”
