Saturday 4/13 Action Opportunities

1. EVENT — There is a voter registration drive going on today! If you have time to help us canvas, please join us at the Staunton Antique Center, 19 W Beverley St, at 9:45am or 11:45am to meet up, get supplies, and a canvassing buddy. Voting is the very foundation of democracy, and it is worth making the effort to help every voice heard by helping people register to vote.

2. EVENT – Trump’s Non-Welcoming Committee: Anti-Trump Protest at LU
Ward’s Rd Lynchburg, Virginia Donald Trump will be giving the commencement address at Liberty University on May 13th. There is a counter protest that has been organized; if you have the time and inclination, feel free to join them. More details here.

3. Lawmakers are eager to get in on the repeal of net neutrality, viewing legislation as a tool to prevent the FCC from re-imposing similar net neutrality rules in the future and a complement to regulatory action. In recent weeks, Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) introduced the Restoring Internet Freedom Act (S993, here) that would accomplish both the repeal of net neutrality and prevent the FCC from reinstating the rule without Congress’s approval. While his plan has the backing of 10 Republican senators who signed on as cosponsors, it may not end up being leadership’s preferred bill on the issue. Senate Commerce Committee Chairman John Thune (R-SD), whose committee has jurisdiction over communications issues, is drafting legislation that he hopes will gain the bipartisan support needed to get the 60 votes required to pass the bill in the Senate. Contact our senators and ask them to publicly commit to opposing any rollback for net neutrality.

  • Kaine: Washington DC: 202–224–4024, Manasses 703–361–3192, Roanoke 540–682–5693, Virginia Beach 757–518–1674, Richmond 804–771–2221, Abingdon 276–525–4790, Danville 434-792–0976, and his contact form is here.
  • Warner: Washington DC 202-224-2023, Roanoke 540-857-2676, Abingdon 276-628-8158, Norfolk 757-441-3079, Richmond 804-775-2314, Vienna 703-442-0670. His “Submit Comment” form is here.
  • Suggested script: “Hello, my name is _______, and my zip code is ________. I am contacting Senator ____________ to ask him to publicly commit to oppose S993, or any other measures to roll back net neutrality. Thank you.”

4. We still need to make sure that Senator Kaine knows that his constituents are vehemently opposed to the AHCA bill repealing the Affordable Care Act. Where Warner has publicly denounced the bill, Kaine still has not. In a press release, he said, “The Senate should put this bill into committee, let the CBO study it, hold hearings to hear from doctors and patients and engage in a meaningful bipartisan effort to improve health care.” The first part of the quote negates the sensibility of the second part: hearings and a meaningful bipartisan effort to improve healthcare can be done in regards to our existing system, without throwing women and people with pre-existing conditions under the AHCA bus. Contact Senator Kaine again and let him know that you are wholeheartedly opposed to the AHCA bill.

  • Suggested script: “Hello, my name is _______, and my zip code is ________. I cannot overstate the importance of your vote against the repeal of the Affordable Care Act. The unconscionable vote of the House has endangered the well being and lives of millions of Americans. Please publicly commit to vote down the GOP’s AHCA, and then do so. Thank you.”
