Friday 5/12 Action Opportunities

1. As most likely everyone knows by now, Trump has fired the Director of the FBI, James Comey. He did happen to be the lead investigator of Russia’s alleged interference in the 2016 election, and had just requested an increase in resources to aid the investigation. Some House members have introduced H.R. 356, the Protecting Our Democracy Act, which would establish an independent commission of 12 non-governmental appointees to fully investigate Russian interference in the 2016 election and any potential ties to the Trump campaign. Contact our Congressman to ask him to support this measure.

  • Goodlatte: Staunton (540) 885-3861, Harrisonburg (540) 432-2391, Lynchburg (434) 845-8306, Roanoke (540) 857-2672, Washington DC 202-225-5431 and email form here.
  • Suggested script: “Hello, my name is _______, and my zip code is ________. I’m calling to ask that Representative Goodlatte support the bipartisan bill H.R. 356, and if necessary, sign a discharge petition to bring the bill to an immediate vote on the House floor. An independent commission is needed as soon as possible to remove the political games that have been hindering the investigation into Russia’s interference in our election. Thank you for your hard work answering the phones.”

2. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is requesting a closed-door briefing with Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to answer questions about Trump’s decision to fire James Comey from his post as FBI Director. Sessions had previously recused himself from involvement with matters relating to the investigation into the Trump campaign but instead broke his promise by firing the person overseeing the investigation into the Trump campaign. Contact the our senators to demand AG Jeff Sessions and Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein testify under oath.
