Tuesday 5/2 Action Opportunities

1. Once again, The White House and House Republicans are threatening a repeal and replacement of the ACA by the end of this week, with a vote on a revised version of the disastrous bill introduced in March. The old version failed to make it to the floor for a vote. This revised version is no better and would, in fact, be worse for many, as highlighted by this NY Times article. We need to inundate Representative Goodlatte’s office with reminders that this revised bill is still unacceptable.

  • Goodlatte: Staunton (540) 885-3861, Harrisonburg (540) 432-2391, Lynchburg (434) 845-8306, Roanoke (540) 857-2672, Washington DC 202-225-5431 and email form here.
  • Suggested script: “Suggested script: “Hello, my name is _______, and my zip code is ________. I am contacting Representative Goodlatte to let him know that the current bill to repeal and replace the ACA is still unacceptable. It would raise deductibles for middle-income individuals and families and raise premiums for those with pre-existing conditions. If passed, this bill would jeopardize the health and well being of too many 6th district constituents.”

2. Last Friday, we had an Action Opportunity about The Working Families Flexibility Act (HR 1180). House Republicans are pushing forward with the bill to strip workers of overtime protections and erode the 40-hour work week. The House Committee on Education and the Workforce has passed HR 1180. A full floor vote is scheduled for today. Goodlatte is a co-sponsor for the house bill, but there is also a reciprocal senate bill (S 801). Let Goodlatte know that his constituents disapprove of his sponsorship of this bill, and also reach out to our senators to ask them to oppose the senate bill.

  • Goodlatte: Staunton (540) 885-3861, Harrisonburg (540) 432-2391, Lynchburg (434) 845-8306, Roanoke (540) 857-2672, Washington DC 202-225-5431 and email form here.
  • “Hello, my name is ______ and my zip code is _______. I am contacting Representative Goodlatte to say that his co-sponsoring House Resolution 1180 is not in the interest of his constituents. The Fair Labor Standards Act already allows an employer to grant time off to employees who work overtime. H.R. 1180 adds nothing but delay and risk to the employees’ right to receive extra compensation when they work more than 40 hours in a week. I strongly oppose this bill, and Representative Goodlatte’s support of it. Thank you.”
  • Kaine: Washington DC: 202–224–4024, Manasses 703–361–3192, Roanoke 540–682–5693, Virginia Beach 757–518–1674, Richmond 804–771–2221, Abingdon 276–525–4790, Danville 434-792–0976, and his contact form is here.
  • Warner: Washington DC 202-224-2023, Roanoke 540-857-2676, Abingdon 276-628-8158, Norfolk 757-441-3079, Richmond 804-775-2314, Vienna 703-442-0670. His “Submit Comment” form is here.
  • Suggested script: “Hello, my name is _______, and my zip code is ________. I am contacting the senator to ask him to oppose Senate Bill 801, the Working Families Flexibility Act. We don’t need to make it easier for employers to create unpredictable work schedules or ask us to work more than 40 hours a week without extra pay; we need real supports like paid family leave, guaranteed sick days and fair schedules. Thank you so much for your hard work answering the phones.”
